DAY at Burning Man 2000

Our theme camp this year was the Temple of Virtual Wisdom, an inviting spot where you enter a mortal and leave as a god. We were pleased with the great comments on our camp. With almost 1200 square feet under tenting, we had a great space for yoga, discussion and hanging out. Our tent also miraculously survived the high winds that damaged some other camps later in the week.

We saw the dust blowing to the south and were thinking, "It's going to miss us!" when suddenly the sky went totally dark. "Uh-Oh!" we said. While the women relaxed inside camper shells, the guys grabbed every piece of rope, bungee and wire we could find and set about holding the tent together while the wind whipped around us.  We'd done all we could so we sat on the couch, opened the first bottle of Scotch......

....and when the storm was over, our wives and girlfriends found us sitting in our still-standing tent working on a third bottle of "I don't remember," laughing incoherently.

Several other campers weren't as lucky. PVC domes didn't hold up too well. Even a metal-framed 60ft. dia. geodesic was collapsed by the wind.

A lobster-mobile pulled up in front of the temple one day. We had visits from several other very strange vehicles during our stay. We had our own art car there with us, Ricky the Fish. Also residing at our camp was a truck covered with pennies (We don't have a picture of that. Sorry!)

Next to our camp was a very mysterious camp called The Cabal of the Eye. There were strange, dark, gothic sculptures outside and the camp seemed deserted most of the time. Every once in a while a big black Cadillac would park there that looked like a cathedral.

It was decorated with dentures and whips and had stained glass windows. It's license plate said, CRTHDRL, which we took to mean carthedral. It would stay awhile and then be gone. We never saw anyone. Very mysterious. And very gothic. We enjoyed camping next to them (whoever they were!).

Out on the open playa, the immense dry lake bed that provides a home for the event, there is some great and unusual art. The pipe above is one piece. The yellow structure next to the pipe is a giant ashtray. It was practically necessary to have a bicycle to be able to see some of the artwork that was farther out from the city.
