About Amphibia

Emissaries from the planet Amphibia have returned from Burning Man 2007.

The main feature - the open-to-the-public Amphibia tent – a 65-foot diameter, 16-foot high radial dome that looks somewhat like a giant jellyfish with a 32-foot tall tower in the center of it. See photo of tent model.  Within the dome will be a jungle themed space full of couches. We hope to be allowed to have some live plants (See our plan for managing live plants on the playa). There will be a small stage and movie screen. We plan to have a misting system in part of the space and maybe a fountain. The central tower will have a ladder up to an observation platform about 24 feet up. The Amphibia structure will be a large and unique structure that will stand out along the Esplanade day and night. See camp layout.

Our goal for Amphibia - to provide an inspiring and relaxing, jungle-like place for people to hang out, talk, watch and participate in performances, and see environmentally themed art movies. We intend to encourage dialog on easy ways to be “green.”

Leave No Trace - We want Amphibia to be a good example of leave no trace camping on the playa. Here are our LNT guidelines

Camp membership - At this time, membership in the Amphibia theme camp is closed. The camp is full.

Camp Activities

At Amphibia on Tuesday, August 28th at 9:00 PM ArcheDream for Humankind will present DEEP BLUE, a fantastic, blacklight voyage that takes you way up high into the sky and low, below into the sea.  DEEP BLUE is a magic journey through the elements of Earth, Air, Water and Fire and features great solo and group dances as well as wild & captivating characters in hand-painted masks & costumes. 60 mins. Suitable for all ages.
ArcheDream
uses archetypal characters that perform allegories, or dreams, to personify vital issues pertaining to our lives. ArcheDream’s costumes are illuminated with ultra-violet light, which accentuates the supernatural aspect and reveals the dreamscape as the action unfolds. They will be at Burning Man for the first time this year and we are honored to host their amazing performance.

An Inconvenient Truth - Live! Thursday, August 30th at 10AM
Paul Valva is
District Director for The Climate Project - the group of individuals personally trained by Al Gore to give the Inconvenient Truth presentation. He will be presenting the same slides shown in Al Gore's movie plus others from his personal experience. This live presentation will be interactive with the audience - he explains in greater detail, and answers questions. With an audience of experienced and like-minded people that we'll have at BM, the presentation will be much more about solutions and action.  He will spend most of the time brain-storming with the audience about what can we do about it - in our personal lives, at school, at work, politically, etc.  Then he share the audience's responses with Mr. Gore back in Nashville.

The Green Man - Friday, August 31 at 8PM
The Cosmic Mass, originally planned for Thursday night has canceled. However, on Friday night at 8PM, several of the Cosmic Mass staff will hold a similar ecstatic dance ritual in Amphibia with the theme - The Green Man. This will be a multimedia, audience participatory, techno-dance ceremony/celebration that will be really great.

Midnight movies - artsy movies with an environmental theme.

Monday night - An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore. This is the classic global warming movie that is moving this issue from the back burner to the forefront of American politics.
Tuesday night - Koyaanisqatsi - a poetic visual feast that shows man's relationship with nature and how that relationship is out of balance. Includes fantastic music by Philip Glass.
Wednesday night - Baraka - another visual feast of exotic imagery both human and natural that show in a visceral way how man is a part of the earth.

DIY Interactive Educational Displays on green topics will be stationed around the perimeter of the Amphibia dome.

Really Rad Raw-tastic Potluck on Tuesday, at 1:30 PM
Come and share in the feast! Bring your yummiest Raw food items to this delightfully sensuous gathering. We will be congregating to eat, drink, and be merry the old fashioned un-cooked way with lots of great information on nutrition, sustainable living, and vibrant health
.

Ceremony to Awaken the Power of Genetic Memory on Saturday, September 1 at noon.
Deep within, each of us holds a vast repository of information which has lain dormant until now. Let us come together to celebrate this most radical of gatherings, hold ceremony to honor the elements and spirit, and awaken the treasure within, the gifts of our ancestors. Through the power of intent we will walk the dream path of remembrance and dive into an ocean of forgiveness. It will be a truly auspicious gathering and your presence is most welcomed.

Big froggy puppets - In The Heart of The Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre from Minneapolis, Minnesota, will be providing some giant puppets for Amphibia entertainment.

"The snake pit" - an area of the Amphibia tent filled with stuffed lizards, snakes, frogs, etc. It will serve as a comfy space to lay around.

Amphibia Greeters Shift - The Amphibians will take over a shift as Burning Man Greeters on Wednesday morning from 8 to noon

Wedding Wednesday - Thumper and Pleasure will be getting married at the Man at 7:00 Wednesday night. You can come and get married, too!. The ceremony will be officiated by the illustrious immortals, Mr. and Mrs. God.

Theme Dress Days in Amphibia

Tutu Tuesday - put on your tutus and come to Amphibia on Tuesday.

Fursday - wear your fake fur and animal print fabric on Thursday.

Fishnet Friday - wear fishnet in Amphibia on Friday. Why? Just to add to the fun.

Performance stage - acts to be scheduled. We are looking for poets, speakers, performance artists, musicians, etc. to do something environmentally-themed on the Amphibia stage. Contact us if you are interested in performing, speaking, etc.

Camping with Amphibia are members of Troupe Salamandra - a new fire spinning group from central Arizona. They may do a show or two.

During the times without scheduled activities, Amphibia will be open as a chill space with carpeting, couches, and ambient music.

After Burning Man

We have long range plans for Amphibia. We hope to make it a traveling environmental education facility. We would set it up for a week or two in different towns with the idea that school kids could take field trips to Amphibia. We hope to have a curriculum of education and entertainment on environmental subjects that can help all of us live healthier lives and reduce negative impacts on the environment. Amphibia at Burning Man is just the beginning!

The planet named Amphibia
is wet and deeply green.

It’s quite a bit like Earth was once,
when dinosaurs were seen.

And on this planet far away
a special frog was born one day…

Infinity!—a hero’s name,
this frog was destined for Earth fame.

They told her the assignment—to save the frogs on Earth.

“Our cousins are endangered there,
the humans rule without a care.

They’re stuck on greed and foolish pride, they do not see that deep inside,

They’re part of nature, not above it,
they need to learn to truly love it.

Act with LOVE and off you go—
be sure to give them all a show!"

And off she flew through deepest space
toward a new and different place.

She flew too fast for us to see,
She earned her name—Infinity!

At last she came to planet Earth,
a precious thing of unknown worth.

Where to start? She made her plan
to visit first the Burning Man
.
