Kumbha Mela 2001 Photo Gallery - Page 43
More photos from Maha Shivratri on Feb. 21, 2001.
These photos were taken at Shiva temples in the vicinity of Allahabad,

Devotion and faith like this on a massive scale can only be found in India.

I bought a rudraraksha bead and gave it to this gentle Sadhu because the seller refused to give him one. Overcome with gratitude, he was telling me how he dreamed of having one of these (seen in his hand) for Shivratri – "Shiv has granted my wish". As he spoke while we were walking together, I flipped out the camera and clicked.

Clay pots for Ganga jal and flowers for sale. Pots are sold noosed together in bunches of five for Rs.5 and a necklace of flowers with datura in a leaf basket sells for Rs.1 each.

On all the four corners of this small temple, devotees were making offerings, lighting fires and incense and praying. Each one has their own unique way of expressing themselves to God.

A pot being emptied on a linga in the verandah of the temple.

Deep in prayer.
