The pilgrims have moved on, but for these men work continues. They each receive 50 paisa per meter for removing buried electrical cables. That’s equivalent to a little over a dollar per kilometer. Hard work in the hot Sun.

Sector six between the road and railway bridge. The drainage pipes have been removed. Difficult to imagine that there were millions of people here just a couple of weeks ago.

Holes like this, temporarily covered with straw containing the sewage from toilets, will be filled in with sand later. It seems that Ganga Ma in additional to clearing away our sins, is also expected to wash away our physical waste when She comes roaring down this way in June.

Taking down electric transmission wire from the poles, rolling it up and transporting it away on the back of the tractor. Phew! At least this bit is in the shade.
In Jhunsi on the other side of the bridge from Allahabad city, the Kriyayog Research Institute beckons proclaiming "50 minutes of Kriyog practice evolves a person equal to 100 years of normal evolution".

This family were filling holes and clearing the ground when I forced them to take a break in the shade. They are paid Rs.55 per day. That’s me in the middle with baby Jyoti.

Using soft dark clay soil from the Ganga, this family is preparing hundreds of ‘little Shivs’ for one of many puja ceremonies to be held on Shivratri. Clay images of Ganesh and other Gods are placed in the centre next to a large Shiva linga. Surrounding them are hundreds of little shiva lingas, each topped with a grain of rice.
