Kumbha Mela 2001 Photo Gallery - Page 16

Photos taken  January 22 and 23, 2001.

Entertaining the locals at the Rainbow camp! The only camp that has no hierarchy, head or Guru here at the Mela. Not surprisingly, the camp is located outside the mela grounds in a beautiful grove of mango trees. Have you heard of the Rainbow Tribe?

Putting up another tepee here on high ground at Rainbow camp, away from all the grandeur and noise of the mela. A rainbow of nationalities share to create this reality. A peaceful and tranquil place to be.

This holy man made a vow to God to keep his hand held up in this position 12 years ago. It now permanently stays in that position. He is seen here giving holy ash to pilgrims.

The big day is approaching and the roads are beginning to choke. Pilgrims were having difficulty crossing from one side of the road to the other. There will be a lot more of this in the next few days.

The scene at 4.30pm at the entrance to one of the pontoon bridges.

Composite picture. Pilgrims beginning to fill up one of the ghats on the East of the Ganga. 12.30pm.
This site, like all others, will continue to fill up until there is no empty space left.
