Ayurveda – Balancing Mind, Body and Spirit
Ayurveda is a 5000 year old system from India for understanding and treating health problems. It is based on the concept that there are three biological principles or energies that must be in balance in order to be healthy. If these energies, called the doshas, are out of balance, disease results. The three doshas, also called tridosha, are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
In Ayurvedic theory, each person has one of seven different constitutions and body types based on the doshas, both individually and in combination. For example, a person can have a Vata personality, a Vata-Pitta personality or even a Vata-Pitta -Kapha personality.
Diseases not only result from the imbalances of the doshas, the symptoms of the diseases indicate which dosha is causing the problem. Treatment of imbalances is accomplished by herbs, diet, and activities designed to restore balance. If a person has symptoms that indicate a shortage of Pitta energy, for example, there are herbs and foods that will increase the Pitta component of the personality, thus restoring the balance of the doshas. This results in better health for the individual.
