ELIPHANTE - a photo essay by Royce Carlson     Page 2

The main "driveway" to Eliphante happens to go across a vigorous creek so we parked before crossing. On the other side began a path shrouded with an intriguing canopy of driftwood leading up the stream bank to the small complex of free-form buildings and sculptures.

The first structure they began over 20 years ago is the namesake for Eliphante. They didn't intend it to look like an elephant, it just turned out that way. The main entrance is a tunnel....

Every square inch of the plastered wall of the tunnel was painted with tiny colorful brush strokes. It winds inward until the main room is entered. The walls of the main chamber are completely covered with a mosaic of glass, stone, wood, tile and more. A piano was built into one of the walls beneath a mosaic of driftwood. The brightly colored free-form windows in the walls and ceiling cast a magical light within the room.
